For the large installed base of Nortel systems that do not support IP connectivity, Nectar offers the ability to connect via the Serial Interface. This is a UCMP Relay Offer and supports alarming only. Nectar's Connection Broker also provides remote access to the system for programming and remediation. As the alarm definitions are consistent through the product line, this offer applies to multiple Nortel systems that do not support Ethernet connectivity, including: - - CS-1000 - Option 81 - Option 61 - Option 11 The serial interface has typically been accessed via expensive SEB modems. This Nectar solution obviates the need for the SEB modem and uses a Terminal Server from Digi. The two-port model (PortServer TS 1/2/4, Digi part #7000.2043) is strongly recommended as it allows Nectar to use Port-1, leaving Port-2 available for local technician connectivity, as needed. ##### [http://www.digi.com/products/serialservers/portserverts#overview](http://www.digi.com/products/serialservers/portserverts#overview) ***Note*** *The Nortel Comm Port must be set to* ***Alerting****. This is as it would be for an SEB modem.* ### About this Guide This guide includes the following: ##### [Configure Nortel Serial Port (TTY)](/docs/nortel-serial-alarming-deployment-guide-2#_bookmark8) ##### [Digi Adapter Connection to Nortel](/docs/nortel-serial-alarming-deployment-guide-2#_bookmark10) ##### [Set Up Digi Adapter](/docs/nortel-serial-alarming-deployment-guide-2#_bookmark12) ##### [Configure Nectar UCMP](/docs/nortel-serial-alarming-deployment-guide-2#_bookmark14) ##### [Import the Error Decoding Table](/docs/nortel-serial-alarming-deployment-guide-2#_bookmark16) ##### [Conclusion](/docs/nortel-serial-alarming-deployment-guide-2#_bookmark18) ### Audience This guide is intended for system administrators or engineers who have system administration access and technical knowledge of Nectar UCMP. Its purpose is to assist users in connecting via the Serial Interface. ### ## Configure Nortel Serial Port (TTY) Follow these steps to configure the Nortel Serial Port: 1. Assign the user **MTC** to the TTY port. 2. Remove any other users. - You can see which users are assigned to a TTY port within **LD 22, prt adan tty**. - You add/remove users to a TTY port within **LD 17, chg adan tty** *< tty #>*. ## Digi Adapter Connection to Nortel - - The serial port may vary on different Nortel systems. We have found the most common to be **DB-25**. - This connection would require a **DB-25 Female** cable (Digi part **#7600.0199**). - If this connection is not available, refer to the following guides for additional information: #### Digi cable part numbers: ##### [http://www.digi.com/products/cablesandadapters/serialcables](http://www.digi.com/products/cablesandadapters/serialcables) #### Digi cable adapter reference: ##### [http://www.digi.com/pdf/cable_adapter_reference.pdf](http://www.digi.com/pdf/cable_adapter_reference.pdf) ## Set Up Digi Adapter Follow these steps to set up the Digi adapter: 1. The Ethernet port should be assigned a static IP address. 2. When configuring the serial port on the Digi Adapter, select **Console Management**. ![](https://cdn.document360.io/f8330b7a-360f-4ca0-b0ac-2664b7c04c49/Images/Documentation/nortel-serial-alarming-deployment-guide-image-9i2rrjgc.png?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-11-08T17%3A48%3A32Z&se=2026-11-08T18%3A48%3A32Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=JAy7Xtc%2BcmB%2BPuh3SAcrBFgP6RzoO6IaVeTLED9Y4%2BY%3D) *Figure 4-1Select Console Management* The **Serial Port Configuration Dialog - Port 1** appears. ![](https://cdn.document360.io/f8330b7a-360f-4ca0-b0ac-2664b7c04c49/Images/Documentation/nortel-serial-alarming-deployment-guide-image-4l8r18bm.png?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-11-08T17%3A48%3A32Z&se=2026-11-08T18%3A48%3A32Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=JAy7Xtc%2BcmB%2BPuh3SAcrBFgP6RzoO6IaVeTLED9Y4%2BY%3D) *Figure 4-2Serial Port Configuration - Port 1* #### Is there something one has to do in order to populate the User Configuration nectar window? ![](https://cdn.document360.io/f8330b7a-360f-4ca0-b0ac-2664b7c04c49/Images/Documentation/nortel-serial-alarming-deployment-guide-image-bdl7cwao.png?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-11-08T17%3A48%3A32Z&se=2026-11-08T18%3A48%3A32Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=JAy7Xtc%2BcmB%2BPuh3SAcrBFgP6RzoO6IaVeTLED9Y4%2BY%3D) *Figure 4-3User Configuration* 1.
